Console Options - Defaults

The defaults settings control the default connection method, how system descriptions are generated, and default processing options for monitored systems

Connections

When connecting to systems, an organisation will have a preferred connection method, which can be set to ensure that where possible, this connection method is the one selected. System descriptions can be based on several combinations of the network name of the system and any configured description.

Monitored Systems

Due to the limitations of the SNMP v1 protocol, it is not possible to determine the full list of OIDs supported by an SNMP device without enumerating every single OID. This can take a considerable time on complex devices, and to speed up the review of a device's OID tree, the console queries the device in the background, and builds an internal representation of the devices OID tree. It is this internal representation that is used when presenting the OID tree in the user interface,

However, for some devices, the list of available OIDs is not static, and so to ensure the internal representation is still accurate, the device must be rescanned periodically.
