Groups can be defined using a combination of automatic matching
criteria, and manually selected systems.
Automatic matching
Group membership can be determined by matching on:
- Name (patterns and wildcards can be used)
- System configuration
- Services installed
- Programs installed
Manual selection
Individual systems can be manually selected to be a member of
a group.
Sub-groups
Once a number of groups have been defined, a group can be
built up by including a number of sub-groups, and it is possible
to include the sub-group members in the overall group, or use
them to exclude certain systems from a group.
Refresh options
The automatic group membership processing needs to query each
system to determine if it should be a member of a particular
group. There is a balance between group membership accuracy and
performance, in that more frequent determinations of group
membership will improve the validity of the group, but will take
longer. By default, ServerAssist will only determine group
membership once each time the management console is used, but
this can be changed as necessary to reflect different
requirements for different groups.
Matching options
If membership of a group is determined by querying a system
to determine, for example, which services it has installed, a
problem will arise when than system cannot be contacted, due to
a technical error or other issue. In this case it will be
assumed that the system is still a member of the group, if
previously it was found to be a member, and excluded if it was not. |
